Stone Surface Applications
When you want to change the look of your natural stone, Colorado Custom Stoneworks will use it’s stone application process. This is an ideal solution to update and change the look of your stone.
This process is ideal for patios, outdoor kitchens and walkways. It can also be used inside the home. There are four stone applications we use:
Stone Polishing
Stone polishing is a process used on stone where the aesthetic quality is of the stone is a concern. Stone polishing is a two-step process. First, we smooth the stone to remove imperfections. In step two, we polish the stone to give it a brilliant finish.
Stone Bush Hammering
Bush hammering gives a rustic rough finish to modify the appearance of the natural colors in the stone. This gives the surface a textured, slide-preventing grip. This technique is seldom used on granite. For granite, ‘flaming’ is preferred. Marble is also treated with this technique for exterior applications like sculptures, stairways, paving, curbs and items having a non-planar shape.
Stone Leathering
Leathering on granite or marble makes it appear less glossy. This stone application enhances the natural beauty of the stone and makes it easier to clean and maintain. A leathered finish on countertop or tables shows fewer fingerprints and water spots than a polished surface. For leathering, we start by honing the surface. Next we use diamond-tipped brushes. They are run across the surface to add texture. The amount of texture that will result on each stone depends on the actual stone itself. Leathered finishes are not as reflective as glossy, highly polished surfaces. They still have a bit of sheen, but not “shiny.” Leathered finishes offer one more way to let individual personality shine through the design.
Stone Antiquing
Any type of natural stone can have an antique finish. Antiquing is the process of polishing the stone with a heavy-duty brush that gradually wears away part of the stone, leaving a textured surface. The surface is then finished and sealed. Lastly, we smooth and polish the surface. Your antique application can be glossy, or have a matte finish. You can also create a ‘distressed’ look. This could be the perfect finish, giving your patio an ideal texture for all weather conditions.
